Fishing for Red Sea Bream in Japan

Red Sea Bream, a species from the Pagrus genus, known in other regions as Snapper (same genus different species), are extremely popular fish to catch both on a recreational and commercial scale. The Pagrus genus is prized all over the world for their amazing eating, there are at least 7 well known species in this genus, and all have very similar taste and appearance.


This documentary shows the popularity of Red Sea Bream (Pagrus major and Pagellus bogaraveo) in Japan, along with commercial, recreational and traditional fishing methods.

Japan also farms a large amount of Red Sea Bream, of which the process and proprietors are detailed in this documentary.
